The STERN-McCARTHY Visual Prostate Elctrotome consists of three essential parts: 1) The telescopic system is the McCarthy foroblique, identical to that used in the pan-endoscope. It is interchangeable with the pan-endoscope and al other instruments which accomodate this system. 2) The sheath is of bakelite, 8 inches in working length. At the proximal end it is fitted with an insulating dise and a metal cone fitting on which the locking mechanism and water inflow connection are mounted. The lacking mechanism has a spring incorporated in its design to maintain it in the open position to receive the working element. 3) The working element carried both the cutting loop with its control mechanism and the telescope. The cutting loop is controlled by a rack which imports a longitudinal travel of approximately one inch. For ease of manipulation, terminals for cutting current, light and water are brought out at the top of the instrument. this location prevents interference or entangling as the instrument is rotated. The outflow cock is mounted on the working element and connected to a tube which extends through the instrument, termnating near the field of vision. The overflow tube is smaller than the inflow, thus permitting continuous irrigation together with sufficient bladder distension.

Jean Antonin Désormeaux, 1815-1881, presented his "endoscope" at the Academie des Sciences in Paris in 1857. He is known as the "Father of Endoscopy".
Joseph Grünfeld, 1840-1910, was a dermatologist who worked at the department for syphilitic patients at the Policlinic in Vienna. He designed several endoscopes for urethroscopy and cystoscopy and separated the light from the shaft of the endoscope.
Johann Georg Ilg, 1771-1836, was the prosector at the Joseph's Academy in Vienna when Bozzini's light conductor was presented there in 1806. He made some improvements to the light conductor and presented the so called "Viennese Model" shortly later.
Maximilian Nitze, 1848-1906 from Dresden and the Viennese instrument maker Joseph Leiter, 1830-1892, developed the first viable cystoscope.
